Cold Laser Therapy for Chronic Back Pain Management

Posted on by Art Javid

Back Pain Relief Port Orchard

Cold laser therapy might sound like something futuristic or a lavish treatment reserved for the rich and famous. It might even sound a little intimidating if your chiropractor recommends it to you! But, the truth is, this revolutionary healing treatment has been used in Europe and Asia for decades.

Cold laser therapy gained FDA approval in 2001 and now, American patients have access to it as an effective treatment for pain, swelling, and muscle damage. This therapy is specifically for resolving soft tissue damage – tears and abrasions to the muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Numerous studies have shown this treatment to be a safe and effective way to ease chronic back pain and restore key muscle groups.

If you’re interested in the benefits of cold laser therapy, you’ve come to the right place. Holt Chiropractic in Port Orchard, WA is a leading practitioner and your local expert in this treatment option. We’re happy to teach our patients all about cold laser therapy and how it can be incorporated into a Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) treatment plan.

How does cold laser therapy work?

Cold laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light that interact with muscles to accelerate healing. Typically, a medical professional places the laser over very specific areas for a period of time lasting up to a couple of minutes. The light passes through the skin and restores damaged cells in a process that’s similar to photosynthesis in plants.

This treatment is used for a variety of chronic conditions to reduce pain, swelling, and spasms. It can be effective for restoring mobility as well because the light stimulates nerves, ligaments, and cartilage. It’s particularly effective on soft tissue injuries. Cold laser therapy is used to address all the following conditions:

  • Chronic pain in the neck, knees, or back;
  • Arthritis;
  • Fibromyalgia;
  • Carpel tunnel syndrome;
  • Nerve conditions;
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome.

Chiropractic care in tandem with cold laser therapy

Chiropractic care is a natural, non-invasive alternative to traditional treatments. It often assumes the role of integrated treatment as well, when a chiropractor delivers care in conjunction with a specialized professional, such as a physiotherapist or a podiatrist.

Cold laser therapy is also often used in tandem with other treatments – most notably, chiropractic adjustments. This often includes spinal manipulations to correct misalignments in the vertebrae. It may also include usage alongside massage therapy and physical therapy, to restore function and mobility to key muscle groups. Patients have reported long-term benefits of this integrated approach to medicine, such as:

  • Reduced pain;
  • Increased energy;
  • More restful sleep;
  • Improved mobility, functionality, and balance;
  • Reduced spasms;
  • Elimination of numbness and tingling in the extremities.

For the most experienced team when it comes to cold laser therapy, trust Holt Chiropractic. Why is X-raying Important for Chiropractic Adjustments?

Posted on by Art Javid

Back Pain Chiropractor in Port Orchard

Even if you’ve never had an X-ray, you’re likely familiar with how it works. We tend to think about them solely when it comes to broken bones or major accident. But did you also know that chiropractors make use of X-rays before performing adjustments? In fact, modalities like Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) actually rely on radiological imaging from the outset, to set a standard for any care that’s to be given.

X-rays are a critical part of the diagnostic process when it comes to conditions affecting spinal wellness. Through an X-ray, a chiropractor can learn about how healthy your spine is as a whole, even taking measurements for curvature or deviation from the ideal spine. Radiological imaging is also helpful for seeing how a condition may have progressed (or regressed).

Whether you’re experiencing back, neck, or shoulder pain, chances are the problem is rooted in your spine. Holt Chiropractic in Port Orchard, WA offers patients individualized attention and specialized care, using X-rays to deliver tailored care to patients.

The role of X-rays in diagnostics

Before a chiropractor can proceed, it’s necessary to have a complete understanding of how well your musculoskeletal system is functioning. An X-ray provides a detailed, internal picture of your body’s bone structure. They allow chiropractors to rule out certain problems, such as tumors or fractures, to ensure the right assessments are being made. An X-ray may expose conditions such as:

  • Arthritis;
  • Scar tissue;
  • Spinal stenosis;

In using X-rays, chiropractors can even locate asymptomatic conditions in the spine. Chiropractic involves resetting vertebral bones, so an X-ray offers a chance to spot any misalignments. They’re an essential tool in every chiropractor’s diagnostic tool box.

Chiropractic assessments, built on X-rays

In addition to X-rays, chiropractors may also review your medical history, provide a full physical examination, and ask you questions about your symptoms. The more information the chiropractor possesses, the better treatment plan they can develop for you.

When something like medical history is paired with radiological imaging, it’s possible to make even more accurate deductions. Whether as a standalone tool or when used in conjunction with information, X-rays are invaluable. It’s why X-rays and other radiological imaging are at the forefront of CBP: because of the qualitative and quantitative possibilities for diagnosis and treatment that abound from them.

Developing a treatment plan

Chiropractic treatment is built on spinal adjustments. These are essential because of the role the spine plays in your central nervous system. Small misalignments are liable to disturb your body’s homeostasis. By realigning vertebrae, nerve signals flow freely from your brain to all parts of your body.

Not just any adjustment will yield results, however. The right adjustment needs to be made to the right segment of the spine to affect positive change. This is where X-rays shine. Not only do they pinpoint the areas demanding adjustment, successive imaging can also confirm that adjustments are sticking, inciting measureable results.

From whiplash to fibromyalgia, chiropractors work to provide expert, patient-centered treatment. For Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) practitioners, it all starts with X-rays. Is Your Chronic Pain Being Caused by a Spinal Deformity?

Posted on by Art Javid

Chiropractor in Port Orchard Specializing in Poor posure

Spinal deformities affect 7 million Americans. Spinal deformities in and of themselves are not typically a cause of chronic pain. Instead, a spinal deformity is often accompanied by postural issues, which create compensatory challenges for the rest of the body. These problems can be the root cause of a number of conditions, many of which can be traced back to compressed nerves in the spine.

Often, spinal deformities are minor and realized at a young age. With some coaching, younger kids can often overcome issues with compensation during their development years to lead normal lives. But, as with any condition, there are outliers. For some, spinal deformities are severe and cause lifelong problems.

The team at Holt Chiropractic has provided invaluable assistance to Port Orchard, WA patients suffering from spinal deformities of all capacities. We realize the importance in assessing every individual spine, which is why we rely on Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) to help us realize the extent of spinal deformities before treating them.

What kind of spinal deformity am I suffering from?

Spinal deformities come in three main variations, each representing a different deviation from the ideal spine posture:

  • Kyphosis: The most common variant is related to osteoporosis. The chronic weakening of vertebral bones results in spinal deformity in this case. Typically, the front of the bone is crushed, leaving an imbalance between the two sides of the vertebrae. Kyphosis can also be caused by issues with posture, nutrition, neuromuscular disorders, or Scheuermann’s Disease.
  • Scoliosis: This is side-to-side curvature of the spine, taking a C-shape or an S-shape. Beginning in childhood, the condition may not demonstrate any symptoms for years. Scoliosis is often either adolescent (or idiopathic) scoliosis or degenerative scoliosis.
  • Lordosis: This is curvature of the lumbar spine or lower back. Typically, the bottom five vertebrae are affected.

What is the connection between spinal deformity and chronic pain?

A curved spine means that your posture is affected at all times. This is a major problem because the spine is the core of the central nervous system. Nerve signals need to flow unimpeded from the brain through the spine to all parts of the body. When you have poor posture, this puts constant stress on the vertebrae, potentially compressing nerves and resulting in a variety of conditions including:

  • IBS;
  • Back pain;
  • Acid reflux;
  • Chronic fatigue;
  • Sciatic pain;
  • Difficulty breathing.

How does chiropractic address spinal deformity?

Some severe cases may require surgery. But surgery is an expensive, invasive procedure that requires a long recovery time. Alternatively, chiropractic is a non-invasive, natural, relatively inexpensive treatment with few side effects.

A chiropractor can provide spinal adjustments that may help resolve chronic pain issues by correcting subluxations (misalignments) in the spine. He or she will also analyze posture to discover if there are any additional stresses causing the pain and provide guidance on how to correct them sustainably.

Dr. Holt and his experienced, friendly staff in Port Orchard, WA are prepared to help you battle against the chronic pain a spinal deformity can present. Holt Chiropractic uses the Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) program to deliver real results. Call today for a complimentary consultation.

Your Chiropractor is the Best Resource for Back Stretching and Strengthening

Posted on by Art Javid

Your Chiropractor is the Best Resource for Back Stretching and Strengthening

You might know that a chiropractor is the best source for spinal adjustments. But did you know that a chiropractor is also your best source for back stretching and strengthening? Maintaining a limber, yet foundationally-supported spine is key in maintaining a higher quality of life. A chiropractor is a trained spine expert who can help you to achieve this level of wellness.

Instead of researching stretches and strengthening exercises yourself, or turning to an expensive personal trainer, trust a spine expert who is knowledgeable about the best ways to improve your spine. The team at Holt Chiropractic in Port Orchard, WA takes pride in helping patients alleviate back pain and restore long-term spinal health through adjustments, exercises, and other conditioning techniques.

A chiropractic guide to strengthening the spine

A trained chiropractor is best known for providing spinal adjustments. These are necessary to keep the vertebrae in line. When misalignments occur, nerve signals traveling from the brain down the spine to other parts of the body malfunction, causing a range of problems.

But beyond that, a chiropractor will design an exercise program that’s right for you, to help maintain higher levels of health. The spine plays a critical role in supporting body weight and maintaining balance. A healthy spine means less chance of falling and relief from pain. Here are some of the exercises chiropractors will recommend:

  • Foundation training: This program is designed to strengthen key muscle groups through a series of exercises and stretches. It’s intended to reduce back pain, instill good posture habits, and enhance athletic performance. It focuses on the lower back and core.
  • Range of motion exercises: These exercises are intended to improve joint function through movement. For example, moving the neck forwards and backwards, side to side, and chin to shoulder. These exercises can also help reduce pain and build strength.
  • Low-impact aerobic exercise: Cardiovascular maintenance is important for maintaining overall health. That’s why chiropractors often recommend a low-impact exercise regimen to increase blood flow while decreasing stiffness and back pain. This can be as simple as brisk walking or doing a stationary bike routine.
  • Breathing and meditation: One source of pain is a stressful lifestyle. A chiropractor will work with you to develop mindful breathing habits along with relaxation techniques. These may be useful in fighting anxiety and depression, reducing chronic pain, and improving cognitive function. It’s also helpful to incorporate breathing techniques when doing strength exercises and stretching.

Chiropractors can also help identify specific parts of the spine that are “trouble spots.” Then, they can recommend ways to strengthen, say, the lumbar spine (lower back) or cervical spine (neck) through a physical therapy program or an at-home fitness routine.

A chiropractor can be your partner in achieving long-term spinal health. If you’re ready to take control of your health, check out Holt Chiropractic in Port Orchard, WA. We use Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP), a revolutionary program that focuses on yielding real results for chiropractic patients. Call us today for a complimentary consultation.

Chronic Fatigue Starts with your Spine

Posted on by Art Javid

port orchard chiropractor

The Centers for Disease Control estimate that more than a million Americans suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Unfortunately, this is a difficult to diagnose condition, because the symptoms associated with it are often similar to other conditions such as depression. What’s for certain, however, is that CFS is substantively different than just being exhausted every now and then – it’s chronicled as leaving sufferers struggling to stay awake all day, every day.

For patients with CFS, the serious and debilitating nature of the condition can threaten your quality of life. It’s tough to do a good job at work or spend time with loved ones. Many resort to huge intakes of caffeine and early bedtimes to combat it, but to no avail. It’s a condition that seems to have no resolution.

New studies suggest that CFS may have roots in the spine, opening the door for chiropractic care as a potential treatment. If you’ve tried everything but can’t seem to shake your chronic fatigue, the team at Holt Chiropractic in Port Orchard, WA is ready to help you explore the potential benefits of proper spinal health.

Is it really CFS?

The problem with this complex syndrome is that medical professionals aren’t precisely certain what causes it. Some have speculated that it’s connected to genetics. However, it could be excessive stress or a viral infection. Whatever the cause, the symptoms often include:

• Long-term fatigue;
• Sore throat;
• Trouble sleeping;
• Headaches;
• Muscle and joint pain;
• Enlarged lymph nodes;
• Problems concentrating.

CFS is often diagnosed only after a variety of other conditions have been ruled out. Because of the elusive nature of the condition, it may take time before patients receive treatment.

Exploring chiropractic solutions

A diagnosis of CFS doesn’t have to be dire. Trained chiropractors work with patients every day to restore long-term health. The chiropractic approach focuses on the whole person and because CFS is a condition that affects your overall wellbeing, it’s within the realm of a chiropractor’s abilities.

Because of the spine’s importance to your health, even small misalignments can cause symptoms like those associated with CFS. A chiropractor may outline adjustments based on any suspect areas of your spine that may be compressed or blocking nerve signals. He or she may also make diet recommendations as well. Nutritional supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids and magnesium can help mitigate the effects of CFS.

The reason chiropractic is now being touted as a gateway towards understanding CFS is because of the spine’s central nature to your overall homeostasis. General chiropractic and good spinal health can be correlated with a number of positive health outcomes, including:

• Increased energy;
• Reduced joint and muscle pain;
• More restful sleep;
• Relief from headaches;
• Sharper mental acuity.

Some patients see results like the above after just a few sessions. However, chiropractic is intended to be a long-term health solution.

If spinal alignment issues are at the root of your chronic fatigue, a clear and thorough chiropractic approach could be the best step in directly addressing CFS. The seasoned team at Holt Chiropractic in Port Orchard, WA wants to help you live a happy, lively life, and we know that starts with a healthy spine. We use the scientifically-supported, results-driven Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) program to generate real results.

If you’ve been diagnosed with CFS or exhibit the symptoms, contact us today for a free consultation.

Snap, Crackle, Pop: Understanding Chiropractic Adjustment Noises

Posted on by Art Javid

Chiropractic Cracking

Some back and neck pain sufferers won’t seek help from a chiropractor because they’re afraid. It’s natural to be afraid of what you might not understand, and that loud crack your back makes sounds scary! It’s also easy to confuse something like the noise of a chiropractic adjustment with pain.
But, as it turns out, there’s nothing to be scared of. Those sounds mean the chiropractor is doing an effective job at correcting subluxations (misalignments) in the spine, and is putting patients on track to a pain-free life!
The trained team at Holt Chiropractic in Port Orchard, WA knows that you might be afraid of spinal adjustments. But trust us, once you’ve experienced relief from chronic pain, you’ll forget all about the sounds. In fact, you might even learn to love them because they’re a signal for relief to come!

What’s that sound?

Spinal adjustments correct subluxations in the spine through manual manipulation. Many people believe that the cracking sound is related to the bones. However, those sounds occur because of the release of gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, which are trapped in between your joints. The accumulation of these gases is natural. They’re actually byproducts of the fluids that allow joints to function smoothly.
That’s part of why you experience so much relief: the joints are realigned when the gases are released. This is why joints can’t be repeatedly cracked. The gases are quickly released and are no longer causing issues with your joints.

So, you’re saying these sounds are good?

Absolutely! While they might be scary at first, they’re evidence that chiropractic care is realigning your spine. It’s also important to remember that spinal manipulation that doesn’t result in cracking sounds is equally effective. Different types of subluxations require different types of adjustments, some of which may or may not release trapped gasses to produce pops and cracks.
Spinal health is crucial to having a fully functional central nervous system. Spinal realignment is also correlated with a number of benefits, including:

• Restoring balance;
• Providing effective shock absorption;
• Allowing nerve signals to flow to all parts of the body;
• Relieving back and neck pain;
• Resolving digestion issues;
• Easing stress;
• Restoring full motion of joints and muscles.

A trained chiropractor will take a full medical history and help design a treatment program that’s right for you. Sufferers of chronic pain have found that spinal adjustments, along with changes in lifestyle, are crucial to restoring their long-term health.
Don’t be scared—those snaps, crackles, and pops aren’t your bones breaking! In fact, they are all helping your joints work the way they should. Once you see the tremendous benefits of chiropractic care, you may even start looking forward to those sounds!
The experienced staff at Holt Chiropractic are your Port Orchard, WA experts in alleviating pain. That’s why we use the state-of-the-art, scientifically proven Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) program, designed to restore spinal health. Contact us today for a free consultation. 5 Reasons Back-to-School Chiropractic Appointments Are Essential for College Students

5 Reasons Back-to-School Chiropractic Appointments Are Essential for College Students

It’s that time of year again: Students across the country are heading back to campus for the start of another school year. You might think that chiropractic care is only for adults with a long history of back or neck pain, but that’s not the case. Chiropractic care is also essential for college students who want to stay healthy.

The central nervous system is based in the spinal column, so correcting subluxations (misalignments) of the spine is important, no matter how old you are.

Holt Chiropractic in Port Orchard, WA provides expert chiropractic care to students of all ages. Whether you’re in your final years at the University of Washington or you’re a lifelong learner attending Olympic College, we’re happy to consult with you about taking some of the stress off of your spine this semester!

Here are five ways college students benefit from regular chiropractic appointments.

  1. Bolster your immune system: Let’s face it, dorm life is like living in a bacteria factory! You’re in close quarters with your roommates and dozens of other people on a daily basis. You probably share a bathroom with several others. Chiropractic care resolves misalignments that can cause faulty nerve signals to be sent throughout your body. It can help you fight off those pesky viruses that always seem to be going around.
  2. Relieve stress: The demands of college seem to be increasing every year. On top of classes and exams, you may be working a job or participating in extracurricular activities. Spinal adjustments help you stay relaxed, yet full of energy. It’s a natural way to ensure that you’re feeling healthy and ready for anything.
  3. Reverse the damage of excessive sitting: Today’s technology-centric world is bad for your spine. Whether you’re hunched over the computer writing a term paper, or just texting with a friend for hours, the damage of sitting can include back pain, neck pain, and other ailments. But you can correct that through being active and going to regular chiropractic appointments.
  4. Manage your body: Everyone knows that people gain a bit of weight when they go to college: The “freshman 15.” Chiropractic care provides a natural counterbalance to that by opening nerve pathways to your gut, which helps prevent cravings or feelings of hunger when your body is already full. It’s one step toward a healthier lifestyle.
  5. Fatigue: From late nights out with friends to that assignment you procrastinated on until the last minute, college isn’t the best time for regular sleep. That’s why you need spinal adjustments to ensure that your body is well-tuned. Even though you may not be getting eight hours every night, you’ll feel much more energetic after a chiropractic appointment.

If you’re looking for expert chiropractic care, trust the professionals at Holt Chiropractic in Port Orchard, WA. Holt uses Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP), a results-oriented program for designing treatment plans that are as unique as your spine. 5 Ways Pediatric Chiropractic Can Benefit Your Child

Posted on by Art Javid

pediatric chiropractic

There are a lot of myths out there, but the fact is that pediatric chiropractic care is safe and effective. Ensuring that the spine is aligned early enough is excellent for your child’s health.

Spinal adjustments early on go a long way toward preventing future problems. This is because of the nerve centers located in the spine that extend through the rest of the body. By fixing misalignments, you set your child up for a healthy life.

Pediatric chiropractors are trained experts in the field. Children have different needs than adults when it comes to spinal alignment. Holt Chiropractic in Fort Orchard, WA has an experienced staff who are ready to help your child be their healthiest. Here’s how chiropractic care can help your child.

  1. Prevents childhood ailments:

    The fact is that kids get sick a lot. But spinal alignment can have a major impact on your child’s health. That’s because the spine is the hub of the central nervous system. Signals sent to nerves throughout the entire body originate in the spine. Pediatric chiropractic care may help prevent common problems such as:

  • Ear infections;
  • Colic;
  • Enuresis (bed wetting);
  • Mood disorders;
  • ADHD.
  1. Starts children on a healthy path:

    Proper spinal alignment is necessary for your overall health throughout life. Pediatric chiropractic care ensures that your child has the opportunity to start his or her life right. Research has shown that chiropractic care can even prevent chronic illnesses. Correction to the spine early on will ensure that there aren’t major problems later.

  2. Lessens the need for prescription drugs:

    Because your child experiences fewer illnesses, he or she won’t require as many prescription drugs. While there are some cases where powerful drugs are necessary, they have many side effects. Chiropractic care reduces your child’s dependency on prescription drugs.

  3. Reduces risk of childhood injury:

    Did you know that before the age of five, the average child falls more than 2,000 times? Of course, some of this is the child learning how to walk and some of it is the carefree nature of children. But spinal alignment plays a role, too. A child with a properly aligned spine will have better balance and mobility from an early age. This reduces their risk for injury resulting from a fall.

  4. Corrects issues from the birthing process:

    The birthing process can often be traumatic for your new child. As they grow up, slight spinal misalignments and neck traumas that are common following birth may begin to solidify as the norm, which can bring with them years of future alignment troubles. Proper communication between the brain and the rest of the body is essential for good health, which means setting the spine right before normal posture is developed.

Even though your child isn’t in pain, they can still benefit from chiropractic care. The expert team at Holt Chiropractic in Fort Orchard, WA understands how to improve your child’s health. We use Chiropractic BioPhysics, a research-based treatment program that has a unique solution for every patient. Contact us today to schedule an appointment for your child.

Addressing Hypertension Through Chiropractic BioPhysics®

Addressing Hypertension Through Chiropractic BioPhysics®

Hypertension is a chronic condition that affects men and women alike, bringing with it some very serious health concerns if it’s not managed appropriately. Hypertension and other blood pressure irregularities are usually treated with specialized medication; however, this medication can cause even more side effects! For many with hypertension, managing the condition can feel like chasing your tail.

In the past few years, however, there have been promising developments within the field of Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP) that have given cause for hope to those suffering from high blood pressure. More specifically, adjustment of a particular vertebrae — the C-1 vertebrae, also called the “Atlas vertebrae” — has yielded astounding results in numerous patients seeking a more holistic way of keeping their hypertension in check.

Learning about “Atlas”

Because your spinal cord is the root of your body’s entire central nervous system, the quest to control ailments like hypertension inevitably routes through it — in this case, the Atlas vertebrae, which has also been identified as the epicenter for numerous other nerve pathways throughout the body.

The C-1 vertebrae is nicknamed Atlas after the titan “Atlas” of Greek mythology, who often pictured holding up the weight of the world on his shoulders. In much the same way, the C-1 vertebrae is charged with holding up our heads, making it an all-important segment of the spine and a critical component to connecting nerve pathways and arteries to your brain stem.

When Atlas falls out of alignment — such as shifting or turning, even so much as a millimeter here or there — it’s going to begin to constrict the nerve pathways and arteries it supports, causing interruption elsewhere in your body. For many, when Atlas is out of alignment, hypertension will follow, among other issues.

Using CBP to treat hypertension

Most people don’t think to connect hypertension with neck or neck pain. In fact, very few physicians will make this connection either! But CBP practitioners understand Atlas’ role in your body’s spinal health and the connection spinal health has to your heart.

Because CBP involves taking x-rays and calculating shift based on each person’s unique spine, it’s easier to see when Atlas and any other cervical vertebrae might be out of alignment or shifted enough to be affecting your wellbeing. Once visual data is in hand, a chiropractor can tailor and adjustment plan to set things back in motion to the appropriate alignment.

Talk to your local chiropractor about your hypertension today and schedule a consultation to see if Atlas is giving you trouble. If it is, CBP could be a step in the right direction to treating your hypertension in a meaningful way, without side effects!

Chiropractic BioPhysics, or CBP, is one of the most scientific, researched, and results-oriented corrective care techniques. CBP-trained chiropractors aim to realign the spine back to health, eliminating nerve interference, and addressing the source of pain, fatigue, and disease. As with all chiropractic care, CBP is gentle, painless and non-invasive.

If you or a loved one is suffering from the effects of spinal misalignment as a result of an auto accident, sports injury, poor posture, or just plain gravity — and are sick and tired of masking your symptoms — please contact Holt Chiropractic and Massage at our Port Orchard, WA office for a complimentary consultation.

Do You Know If Your Sunscreen Is Safe?

Posted on by Art Javid

Your sunscreen may not offer you as much sun protection as you think. That’s the word from the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which has released its annual Sunscreen Guide.

sunscreen protection and chiropractic

The organization reported that almost three-fourths of the 750 products examined “offer inferior sun protection or contain worrisome ingredients.”

The worrisome ingredients include oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate. Oxybenzone is a UV filter that disrupts hormones, yet was in 70 percent of the non-mineral sunscreens evaluated for this year’s guide. As for retinyl palmitate, government-funded animal studies indicate it may skin tumors cancers when used on skin in the presence of sunlight.

In fact, EWG says there is “little scientific evidence” to show that sunscreen plays a role in preventing skin cancer.

UVB plus UVA sun protection

EWG cautions that “good sunscreens” should not only guard against sunburn, primarily caused by UVB rays, but also protect people from lower-energy UVA rays. UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis. Nearly every product examined this year meets the FDA standard – but EWA says that standard is not stringent enough.

It recommends bringing the standard up to the level required in Europe, where UVA protection has to rise in proportion to SPF. SPF stands for “sun protection factor,” but the term refers only to protection against UVB rays, not UVA rays. Because of that, EWG points out, choosing a product with an SPF higher than 50 doesn’t necessarily indicate more skin protection. While most industrialized nations cap SPF at 50-plus, in the U.S., 15 products advertised as SPF 100 or higher.

Be wary of sprays

Sunscreen sprays currently dominate the market, but EWG advises consumers to avoid them. EWB fears the sprays don’t provide a thick enough – or even – coating on skin. Moreover, it is worried about consumers inhaling the product.

Mineral-only sunscreen

EWG favors mineral-only sunscreens, which are available at stores such as Whole Foods. Such sunscreens typically use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. According to EWB, they offer good protection from UVA rays, don’t break down in the sun and generally lack potentially harmful additives.

Sunscreen alternatives

  • Green vegetables. The carotenoids in green vegetables prevent sunburn.
  • Red fruits and vegetables. Watermelon and tomatoes contain lycopene, a natural sunburn protector. Participants in a German research study who ate a combination of tomato paste and olive oil (for absorption) reduced their sunburn by 41 percent.
